The Lost Dogs – Michael Vick’s Dogs and their tale of Rescue and Redemption

Hi Everybody,

Michael Vick is back in the news recently due to his desire to get a pet dog for his daughters. I talked about him in my Sept 9 2009 post “Let’s Not Fight”. Since that post, he has served his time, returned to the NFL, and has continued to work with the Humane Society speaking to kids about dogfighting. Here is Wayne Pacelle’s (president of HSUS) recent post “Michael Vick and Having a Pet”.

My personal opinion is it is difficult for me to believe Michael Vick has changed so quickly. The horrific actions he took occurred only a few years ago, so I don’t think he is entitled to have a dog so soon.

Yesterday I finished reading The Lost Dogs: Michael Vick’s Dogs and Their Tale of Rescue and Redemption by Jim Gorant.

This book reads like a detective novel, and I had a difficult time putting it down. It traces the Vick case through the legal system, and follows the journey for several of the dogs from their life on the Vick property, to languishing in shelters, to living in foster homes and their current situation. I must say, there were parts of this book that were very disturbing when the author writes about how the dogs were treated, tested, and then disposed of at the Bad Newz Kennels.

However, when he follows the story of Leo, Little Red, Jonny Justice, and others it becomes a fascinating and uplifting recount of the dogs reaching their potential which would not have been imagined when the dogs were first seized from Vick’s property. One of the prior Vick dogs is now part of a reading program for children!

The book also highlights the dedication and level of commitment the various animal rescue groups and foster families took toward saving so many of the dogs, as the original goal was to save 10% from euthanasia. It turns out the saved number was closer to 90%. One of my personal favorite animal groups, Best Friends Animal Society, is currently caring for over 20 of the Vick dogs.

In full disclosure, if you choose to purchase The Lost Dogs: Michael Vick’s Dogs and Their Tale of Rescue and Redemption through any of the links I have provided, I will receive an affiliate commission from Amazon.com.
